SLO High School robotics team finishes No. 15 in worldwide competition

A student robotics team from San Luis Obispo High School finished No. 15 at a recent world championship competition in Dallas.

Three students and a coach from San Luis Obispo High School Robotics Team competed against teams from all over the world at the VEX Robotics World Championships — marketed as the largest robotics competition in the world.

Gov. Newsom reverses parole decision for woman who killed CHP officer

Gov. Gavin Newsom reversed a parole board decision to grant release to a woman who was convicted and sentenced for the killing of a CHP officer in 2010, the SLO County District Attorney’s office announced Wednesday.

Kaylee Ann Weisenberg, who hit and killed CHP officer Brett Oswald while driving high on methamphetamine, was sentenced to 15 years to life for the June 2010 killing. Oswald was 48.

Thousands of dollars of crab stolen from Morro Bay fish market

Thousands of dollars worth of crab was stolen from a Morro Bay fish market Monday night, the company announced on its Facebook page along with security camera footage of the incident.

Giovanni's Fish Market & Galley, on the northern end of the Embarcadero in Morro Bay, said in the Facebook post that the theft occurred on Monday evening. Giovanni DeGarimore, the owner of the market, clarified in an email response to KSBY that the theft occurred around approximately 11:30 p.m.

Special Olympics returns to San Luis Obispo on Friday after 3-year hiatus

The Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC) makes a return to San Luis Obispo on Friday, May 5 at Cuesta College. It’s the first SOSC event in SLO County since 2019.

The 2023 Spring Games begin at 10 a.m. with the opening ceremony. Athletes will be introduced alongside officers of the California Highway Patrol and other law enforcement agencies.

Competitions start at 11 and end around 3 p.m.

City of Atascadero to appoint new city manager

Atascadero City Council will appoint a new city manager during their May 9 regular council meeting, the city announced Monday.

James R. Lewis, an Atascadero resident for nearly 20 years, will be appointed to the position. He previously served as the Atascadero assistant city manager and economic development director for eight years until February 2013.

Suspected DUI driver injures 4 San Luis Obispo residents in Tulare County police pursuit

Four San Luis Obispo residents were injured Sunday after a suspected DUI driver crashed into their vehicle during a police pursuit in Tulare County, according to California Highway Patrol.

All four residents — two adults and two juveniles — were transported to Kern Medical Center with minor injuries, according to a CHP report detailing the incident.

Local nonprofit unveils two new murals in SLO County

Two new murals have been unveiled in San Luis Obispo County by a nonprofit tourism marketing organization based in SLO County.

The artwork, commissioned by Visit SLO CAL for California Tourism Month, consists of two separate murals in SLO County cities — unveiled as part of a larger countywide art tour.

One mural, titled “Eternal Blossom,” can be found in San Luis Obispo on the Scout Coffee building downtown. The other, called “Fly to Her,” is in Cambria on the side of Bob & Jan’s Bottle Shop.
